What we need to question is bricks, concrete, glass, our table manners, our utensils, our tools, the way we spend our time, our rhythms. To question that which seems to have ceased forever to astonish us. We live, true, we breathe, true; we walk, we open doors, we go down staircases, we sit at a table in order to eat, we lie down on a bed in order to sleep. How? Where? When? Why?

Describe your street. Describe another street. Compare.

-Georges Perec, Infra-ordinaire, 1989

The Toronto Diner Series

I began making linocut prints of diners in Toronto the first summer of the pandemic, when we were all missing the nourishment (both social and caloric) of our local greasy spoons. We were wandering (perhaps floundering) more than usual. Fast forward to the present, and we are still feeling the effects of the pandemic as more and more businesses close, rents continue to rise, and time and circumstance continue to reshape our relationship to the urban environment and to one another.

The process of carving a block in relief seems –to me– to echo the architectural surfaces in the buildings depicted, but also the regenerative aspect of the city: reshaping, altering, duplicating. This series is ongoing.

A selection of diner prints will be on view as part of an experimental installation & solo exhibition at Open Studio's Project Space in late 2022/early 2023 - final dates to be determined.
